WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER ADDRESSABLE FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS

Fire alarm systems use three major major components:

  1. The Control Panel

  2. The Initiator Devices

  3. The Notification Devices

The control panel is the brain of any fire alarm system. It communicates with the initiator devices, such as the smoke and fire detectors, and the notification devices such as sounders, flashers, and hooters.

WHAT ARE THE CONVENTIONAL FIRE ALARM SYSTEM AND WHY THEY ARE NOT SUITABLE?

The conventional fire alarms are hardware-based systems based on analog technology and rely on the flow of current to communicate with the control panels. The initiator devices are connected in one or more parallel circuits to the control panel and depend upon the flow of current in these circuits to communicate with the control panel. The initiator devices reduce the flow of current in case of a trigger (fire, smoke, heat, or fault), and the control panel, in turn, initiates the communication to notification devices. Whenever any of the initiator devices connected in a circuit is triggered, the control panel notifies that there is an occurrence somewhere in a circuit but it can not detect the exact device that is triggered.

For example, there are four floors each in two buildings -connected to a single control panel. The control panel will have two LED lights, one for each building. Say there is a small fire in one room on the floor of one of the two buildings. The LED light of the concerned floor will light up but there is no way to know where the fire has occurred.

WHAT MAKES ADDRESSABLE FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS BETTER?

Unlike conventional fire alarm systems, addressable fire alarm systems use digital signals instead of the circuit-based electric system. It is similar to the way a computer works. The signals are based on binary codes - ones and zeroes. With an addressable fire alarm system, the exact device that triggered the control panel can be identified immediately. Each initiator device holds a specific address which is notified on the control panel. This means the protocols to control the fire-related hazard can be targeted to the exact location of the device and be based on the nature of the device that triggered the alarm. In the above example, the firefighters will not only know the exact building where the fire occurred but also the floor and the room where the device was triggered. The entire building won't be evacuated for a small and manageable fire, preventing any chaos or stampede-related accidents.
